
Tenor drummer, Laurel Nolen, recently moved to
Chicago from Texas, but she has connections to the
Midwest. She holds a Bachelor in Arts degree in Russian
from Illinois Wesleyan University. She has been playing
the tenor drum for fifteen years. She has played with
the following bands: Monterey Bay (California), Bayou
City (Houston), Westminster (Oklahoma), and St. Thomas
Alumni (Texas). The major influences on Laurel’s tenor
drumming are Tyler Fry and Mike O’Neil. As a member
of the Grade Two St. Thomas Alumni Pipe Band Laurel
competed with them when they achieved the following at the World Pipe Band
Championships in Scotland: fourth place in 2011, second place in 2012, and fifth
place in 2013. Laurel attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies,
and she has a Master’s degree in Russian Translation and Interpretation. Laurel
currently works as a Russian translator. She enjoys cooking, reading, art, and
jogging in her free time.
